Various Uses of GPS

GPS or Global Positioning System is a navigation system that is assisted by satellites which provide the location of the GPS module on the ground with an accuracy of +/- 2 meters. The global GPS system is controlled by the United States and is provided to anyone freely. The only condition is that this person needs to have a receiver to accept the GPS signals.

GPS was born in 1973 by the U.S Department of Defense. It was created using 24 satellites in space during its early stages of life. This number was slowly reduce to two or three to do the same work. Other countries are currently designing GPS systems to overcome their dependence on U.S. The Russian Global navigation Satellite System was under operation till 2007, but was use only by the Russian military.

The most popular uses of GPS systems have been in tracking cars, cell phones and navigating around town and cities. Apart from these uses by the public, there are loads of other uses of a GPS system. It has been extensively used by the military to track various carriers and fighter jets. It also can be used to track and lead missiles and other rockets. They are also being used to predict weather along with additional tools that detect moisture, temperature and electron density in every location. This information is vital to predict the weather in every location. Another professional use of GPS is in emergencies where a smart phone or a GPS receiver can give the exact location of the person in need. GPS is more efficient than other radio based location providers. Surveying is another area where GPS has proved extremely useful. GPS systems help surveyor make accurate maps of town, cities and neighborhoods. Navigation is another area where GPS as proved very useful.
