When television became so popular, there were plenty of arguments made stating that radio was going to become a thing of the past. It didn’t. It only changed. It’s used for a lot of different things today, and that’s helped keep it alive. The standard AM stations are still in use, and so are FM stations. That’s not all, though. There are satellite radio stations now that you can get all over the world – and you can even get radio stations through the Internet. When people think about radio, those are the kinds of things that come to mind. Some people also think of the ham radio operators out there who still enjoy what they do.
Radio is a frequency, and frequencies can be used for all kinds of things besides sending music and information all over the globe. One of their uses today is in the tracking of criminals. Ankle bracelets that use radio frequency can tell law enforcement where a person is at all times. That’s a great way to keep track of someone while not taking up space in jails that are already overcrowded. Of course, violent offenders can’t be left loose with just a tracking bracelet. It’s used for people who don’t pose a serious danger to society but who still broke the law.
The same types of frequencies can be used for alarm systems. Home security companies often use radio frequencies to operate their equipment. That way they know if an alarm has been set off at a particular residence or business, and they can quickly respond. These alarms can go off when a door or window is opened, or if glass is shattered in an effort to gain entry. Some alarms are loud and obvious, while others are silent. These don’t warn the burglar that there’s an alarm, but they do alert the authorities.
